Your Full Name:
[Senator/Representative], The people of Ukraine urgently demand your support of their deadly struggle against the repressive regime of president Victor Yanukovych. Today, Yanukovych is using Ukraine's police forces to terrorize protesters who marched for their basic civil rights and human dignity in the capital, Kyiv. Without the full support of the United States in the form of sanctions, the people will continue to die at the hands of terrorist-tyrants who currently cling to power in Ukraine. On January 7, 2014, the Senate passed Resolution 319 which says "the President and Congress should consider whether to apply targeted sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes, against individuals responsible for ordering or carrying out the violence." On February 14,2014, the House passed HR 447, "Supporting the Democratic and European Aspirations of the People of Ukraine." It is time to follow through on these resolutions. Already in this one day (Tuesday, Feb. 18), there have been at least six deaths and hundreds of serious injuries due to riot police using Molotov cocktails and hand grenades against protesters, sniping at them from rooftops, firing indiscriminately with rubber shotgun slugs, firearms or worse, aiming at protestors' heads and hearts, and viciously beating anyone captured. Moreover, the regime is using all of its resources to brutally subdue the protesters-hired thugs roam the streets looting stores and attacking people as the riot police look on, the roads leading into Kyiv are blocked by police, the city's underground metro system is shut down, TV news is censored, and journalists are specially targeted for brutal treatment. [Senator/Representative], please act now in the only language Yanukovych understands to tell him that the world stands with the people of Ukraine in their desperate struggle for genuine democracy and dignity: - Sanctions must be imposed on the Yanukovych regime by the United States and the international community immediately. - The international community must investigate human rights abuses by the Ukrainian government. - Europe must act now to secure the European future for Ukraine that so many of her citizens have shed their blood to attain. Yanukovych will continue to kill if the world continues to sit idly by, but not if it acts decisively. Please, [Senator/Representative], the people of Ukraine need your support. The United States must act to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine with all the tools at its disposal. Without immediate action, even more Ukrainians will die at the hands of the criminal faction in control of the government. Sincerely, [YourName]
