Join us for a Pysanky Egg Workshop on March 17, 2018, from 2:00-4:30 pm at St. Elia Orthodox Church.

***Pre-registration at is required!***

For centuries Eastern European peoples have created intricate designs on eggs with wax and dyes. Ukrainians call these eggs “pysanky,” from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, to write, because the lines are “written” on the eggs with a wax stylus. Since ancient times, the design motifs on the eggs have held deep symbolic meanings associated with the coming of spring and rebirth, and since the advent of Christianity, the Resurrection of Christ.

In this 2-and-a-half hour workshop, participants will learn more about this history and symbolism while receiving personal assistance to create a design on an egg using beeswax and five colors. All materials are provided, and participants will go home with a kit that includes wax, the stylus, and packets of dye to use in the future.

Instructor Sue Ellen Turscak learned this craft as a child. She began teaching pysanky workshops to her fellow students at Harvard back in 1982 and has continued to share this craft with her students and others for over three decades.
