Dear Ukrainian Community and Friends!
Over the past 50 years the Ukrainian Community in the San Francisco Bay Area has presented yearly concerts to celebrate Shevchenko’s life. Last year we celebrated the 203rd anniversary of his birth. But how is he relevant today? What is the meaning of Shevchenko to us Ukrainians, to Americans, and to the people of the world?
He has become a symbol for the Ukrainian nation, who, with his Christian humility, poetic imagination, acute sense of justice and fightagainst slavery, awoke a nation to its 1,000-year-old birthright ofhistory, language, culture and freedom! His immortal literary work,Kobzar, was a trumpet’s clarionsound proclaiming the existence of the Ukrainian nation at a time when freedom had no value to an enslaved country. His message of humanism, universal idealism and freedom rings just as true today for all the world, making Shevchenko even more relevant!
With today’stragic events in Ukraine (an undeclared war, albeit a war), where our Ukrainian compatriots are fighting for Ukraine’s democracy and freedom to preserve Ukraine’s sovereign borders, you can do your part to aid in this fight for Ukraine’s survival in the spirit of Shevchenko!
Your part for the success of this event is very simple by doing any or all of these threethings:
1. Attend the concert!
2.Bring your friends!
3. Support bydonating money in any amount, no matter how small; and/or, donatingyour time, no matter how little.
“…Bury me thus I pray, and rise! From chains set yourselves free! And with your foes’ unholy blood, baptize your liberty!…” [taken from “The Testament” (1845) by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s Poet Laureate, Painter, Fighterfor Humanity & Freedom]
